What if "pushing through" was never strength — and was always just your nervous system in survival mode?
That was a hard truth for me to sit with. I spent six decades confusing hyperarousal with resilience. Busyness with coping. Over-giving with virtue.
My latest essay is about capacity — what it actually is, why trauma steals it, and how I slowly began to get it back.

The grey days after giving up sugar are not a sign that something is wrong with you.
They are a sign that your brain is recalibrating — working to restore what years of artificial dopamine hits quietly dismantled.
This is the piece nobody tells you about before you start. The flatness. The nothing-matters. The wondering if this is just who you are without it.
It isn`t.
The neuroscience is clear. The timeline is real. And if you have ADHD or carry the weight of trauma, it hits harder and nobody warned you about that either.

When you play out all day and suddenly crash before tea ❤️

Your friends are shrinking. You`re doing the slow, hard, invisible work of nervous system recovery. And some days — honestly — that gap in pace is really difficult to sit with.
Acceptable and whole are not the same destination. One is about how you appear to the world. The other is about how fully you inhabit yourself.
I`m not here to tell anyone what to do. But I think those of us in recovery deserve a more honest conversation than the one currently on offer — one that takes the relief of the jabs seriously, without pretending that relief and healing are always the same thing.

You didn`t fail the diet. The diet built the addiction.

Not for everyone. Most people can restrict, allow themselves a treat, and move on without a second thought.

But for some of us — those of us whose nervous systems were already carrying more than they could manage, who never quite felt regulated, who found early on that certain foods were the fastest route to feeling okay — the cycle works differently.

Restrict all week. Allow yourself one thing. Feel the relief.

Do it again next week.

And again.

What feels like discipline is actually conditioning. The waiting amplifies the reward. The deprivation primes a nervous system that is already searching for relief to respond more powerfully when the food finally arrives.

After enough cycles, the pathway is laid down.

If you have wondered why you can`t do what other people seem to do so easily — why the pull only gets stronger, not weaker, the harder you try — this may be part of your answer.

It was never about willpower. It was about wiring.

And wiring can change.
